How to Share Your Data Like a Large Organization
For many years organizations have been sharing data. I'm not talking about sharing data to their clients, but sharing data internally among employees. Chances are if you work for, or have worked for, a large organization then you have shared data among your colleagues.
While data sharing has exploded over the last few years with social networking, it has been apart of technology for decades - especially with the advent of networking.
Within organizations, most data sharing takes place via e-mail or through centrally located storage servers. Many companies have file servers connected to their networks that allows employees to transfer, and store, files on those servers.
Networking has now increasing in home use as well. With the increase in broadband Internet usage, more and more people are using routers in their home. Once a router is installed, a small local area network is created.
There is also an increase in the number of computers that are located in homes as well. With numerous computers connected to a router in a home, sharing data between them becomes important. With all computers connected to the network, via the router, sharing data can take place just as it has in organizations for years.
While you don't need to purchase a large server, there are alternatives that can be implemented to create a files storage server. One option is to invest in a network attached storage (NAS) device. Such devices are small boxes that you install hard drives into. Once connected to the network, the NAS device will allow anyone connected to the network to access the storage space on the hard drives.
Another alternative is to take an unused computer and install hard drives into it. From there, you can connect that computer to the network and use it as a central storage server.
One option that these central storage devices can be used for is to backup data from the various computers on the network. From there, you can then backup the data from that one location and backup all the data at one time.
With the increase in networking in homes, it makes it easier to share data between multiple computers by simple creating a centrally located file server.
