How To Live To See Your 80th Birthday

Living to your 80th birthday is an accomplishment, but, how do people live that long, and longer?  Healthy living is the foundation for a long life.  Getting into shape, taking care of your body and caring for your mind can extend your life considerably, giving you much longer to enjoy and much longer for your loved ones to enjoy you.

Healthy living is multi-faceted.  To lengthen your life and deepen your enjoyment of life, you can take several steps towards a healthier lifestyle, starting today!  Start by including some form of activity into your life for at least thirty minutes, three times a week.  Older adults can engage in lighter activity, such as walking and stretching which can increase flexibility and agility and even improve their mood!

You should also drink plenty of water and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Because older adults do not need a very high caloric intake, it is imperative to include nutrient dense foods into their diet.  Foods rich in vitamins and minerals, such as fruits and vegetables, are essential to stay healthy.

Engaging your mind is also important.  Play mind-challenging games such as scrabble and crossword puzzles by yourself or with friends and family.  Mind games can help keep your mind agile and strong.

Cut down on red meats and alcohol.  Having red meat and alcohol in moderation is fine but do not overdo it.  Red meat is high in saturated fat which is damaging to your heart.  Alcohol should be limited to one drink per day for older men and half a drink per day for older women.  A drink is five to six ounces of wine or one twelve ounce beer; hard liquor should be consumed sparingly.

If you are a smoker, stop.  Smoking kills.   As any smoker knows, nicotine is highly addictive.  The sooner you stop smoking the better for your health.  Smoking can cause heart and lung problems, including cancer, emphysema, and asthma.

Making the time now to live a healthier lifestyle can pay off in the long run.  As a younger or older adult, it is never too late to make healthy changes to your life.  Eating green leafy vegetables and whole grains and drinking plenty of water can make your diet healthier while engaging your mind and staying physically active can keep your body in shape.  Living a healthy lifestyle will help make getting older a lot easier.  With some simple healthy changes, you too can live to the age of eighty and beyond.
