Camping with Children
While camping can be considered a fun activity for adults to get away from the hassles of modern living, it can also be away to enjoy time with the family. Children often love camping because it gives them a chance to play in an environment that is different than their usual setting. While they might not realize the amount of effort and planning that goes into a successful camping trip, that's the job of the parent to organize anyways. Camping is a great way to give your kids childhood memories that they will carry for a lifetime. Just be sure to keep safety in mind and your kids will have a lot of fun while also providing them with a chance to learn about nature.
1. If you're going to take your kids camping, it is essential that you lay out the ground rules beforehand. Make it clear what your expectations for behaviour are, and be sure to know the posted rules of any campsite yourself.
2. Camping can be a great way to teach kids about etiquette and common courtesy when it comes to how to deal with neighbouring campers. So always make sure to set a good example by treating your campsite and others with respect.
3. Teach kids how to use imported camping supplies, and take the time to make sure that they don't treat them as toys. One of the things a child should know how to use is a map and compass, and get them oriented with their surroundings. It's also a good idea to ensure your kids know the contents of your first aid kit and how to use them.
4. There are plenty of ways to let your kids be involved with a camping experience so try to make it so that they are not simply bystanders. Have your kids help you to set up your camping tent, and you can even do this in your backyard before your trip. Setting up expensive and cheap tents alike is great way to show a child how following instructions can yield the results they want.
5. If you are going hiking, make sure that the kids stay on designated trails so as not to disturb nature. And tell them not to approach any of animals that they see. The final thing you can teach your kids is how to set up a campfire and the importance of putting it out effectively. The main lesson that you want your kids to learn is to leave the campsite in good condition so that they can enjoy it when they grow up.
