Discover San Diego – Mission Bay
San Diego is home to a number of different and varied tourist attractions, each one having its own unique identity that all in all contribute to the whole San Diego experience. There are attractions that are cultural and historical, attractions that are for the arts, and attractions that are nature oriented, such as the city's many beaches, zoos, and other natural wonders. One such attraction, Mission Bay, has a combination of nature oriented, aquatic, and upscale elements that make it a good representative of the whole of San Diego.
Mission Bay is the recreational bay part of Mission Bay Park. Mission Bay Park is the largest man-made aqua park in the U.S. It is composed of 54% water, and 46% land, all spread out in an area of 4,235 acres, where people can enjoy a large number of recreational activities, and experience the sights and sounds of aquatic life and environments. Both adults and kids can enjoy walking, jogging, and running around the wide aquatic spaces, play sports, enjoy a picnic, sail, even cook out and stay warm via fire rings. There are also a number of regular sporting events that people can attend to watch or participate in.
Mission Bay itself is popular for wakeboarding, sailing, and camping, on its 27 miles of coastline, 19 miles of which are light color beaches that are paralleled by an equally long walking path suitable for jogging, cycling, rollerblading, and even sunbathing. Mission Bay's warm and calm waters are ideal for those who wish to have a more laid back beach experience, suited for swimming and sunbathing. There's even a number of water sections dedicated to specific forms of water sports, like sailing, watercraft use, and water skiing. The annual San Diego Crew Classic rowing competition is also held here every spring. It is composed of two days of competition between eight-oared shells rowed by over a hunderd college, club, and senior crews.
On land, there are many activities that can be done. Camping is a popular activitiy on Fiesta Island, as well as fishing, which is restricted to the non-sports or swimming areas of the water. Birdwatching is also popular, because Mission Bay Park is home to many species of endangered and rare birds. There's even a theme park, Belmont Park, which has many rides, including the famous Giant Dipper Roller Coaster.
