The modern bride is more willing to break away from the tradition of choosing those poorly designed bridesmaid dresses that everyone is so familiar with. Unflattering shapes and puffy sleeves are being pushed aside for alternative dresses that flatter the figure. Brides are starting to consider the personal style of their bridesmaids in addition to their own tastes when selecting colors and styles. In some cases the dresses can be worn over and over again.
One way to update the entire look of the wedding is to dress the bridesmaids in short cocktail dresses instead of long gowns. A dress cut to the knee or slightly higher is ideal for a destination or afternoon wedding. This flirty look is not only contemporary but more comfortable than wearing a long dress.
Jewel tones are not the best choice because most people do not have the right complexion to pull it off. Some brides are even giving their bridesmaids a choice of colors. Red and black work well for a dramatic setting while nude and blush are more appropriate for an elegant or romantic atmosphere.

A favorite Broadway show can be an inspiration for dress style. You can even go retro. Just pick a decade and look for dress styles that reflect that era.
It is perfectly acceptable to have your attendants choose colors and styles that they will feel good in. Everybody should have a great time at the wedding and the better everyone feels, the more memorable the day will be for everyone involved.
